In the waters with … Erica Ehm

In celebration of Mother's Day, we thought it appropriate to speak to Erica Ehm, publisher of http://www.yummymummyclub.ca/. We asked her a few questions about being a mom, a wife and an entrepreneur.

1. What is your career? What do you love most about it?
I am the publisher of YummyMummyClub.ca, a national online magazine that speaks to the woman in every mom. I love that the magazine is written by and for women who are hoping to help and inspire each other. On a more macro level – my staff is incredibly talented, hard-working and smart. So on a day to day basis, I am surrounded by amazing women who bring my site to life.

2. How do you balance motherhood with your career, marriage, family and friends?
Umm, I don’t. I have very low expectations of balance. Life keeps getting in the way of my schedule so I have learned to be less of a control freak and cope with the sh*t that comes my way unexpectedly.

3. How do you stay sane?
By celebrating imperfection and surrounding myself with people who love me and accept me just the way I am. My husband and my kids are incredibly understanding and supportive.

4. Top 3 pieces of advice you would give to other women?
-       Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
-       Don’t give up your dreams and what defines you when you have kids.
-       Remember your imperfections are the qualities that make you unique. Celebrate them.

5. If you could clear up one misconception about your profession, what would it be?
I work in the business of “mommy bloggers”. I hate that term. It’s patronizing and implies the women are silly and not professional. However, many of the women in my biz are professionals from a variety of fields who chose to stay home and become self-employed. I’m proud to work alongside so many of them.

6. Tell us about your first experience with body blitz?
My girlfriend took me and we had a blast. I love being totally naked and jumping into the waters. I was a bit taken a back when a stranger recognized me and started chatting with me while I was totally naked, but she was super interesting. So much so, that she became one of my bloggers. We always tell the story of how we met naked.

7. What is your favourite part of the water circuit and why?
I love the very hot to very cold. Although I don’t stay in the cold very long, it’s an incredible sensation on my skin.

8. Your ride?  The rocket?  Bike?  Car?
I live right beside the subway – so I take it whenever I can. Otherwise, I drive a very sexy white Honda minivan.

9. What books are on your nightstand?
Currently reading Steve Jobs biography. I just finished The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman. Prior to that I read the Invisible Bridge – one of the best books I’ve ever read. Next: Jann Arden’s autobiography.

10. Early bird or night owl?
I. Hate. The. Morning.

11. Proudest accomplishment?
I have 3. My marriage – I picked the right guy. My kids – not only do I love them, I really like them too. And finally, YummyMummyClub.ca – is a dream come true for me.
